Participant Profile – Alan Feler

by | Mar 27, 2025 | Fundraising, Participant Profile | 0 comments

Originally from Argentina, Alan Feler is a Resource Mobilisation Officer at the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). He works to strengthen international cooperation and global networks, maximising the fundraising potential of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. With extensive experience in international law, refugee protection and humanitarian affairs, Alan is committed to driving impactful outcomes in cross-sector partnerships and humanitarian fundraising. In 2024, he took part in the Mastering Fundraising Practices Executive Course at the Geneva Graduate Institute. We had the opportunity to speak with him about his experience in the programme.

Why did you choose to participate in the Mastering Fundraising Practices Executive Course, and how does it align with your role at the ICRC?

In my current role, I work towards mobilising resources with and through actors who are part of the largest humanitarian network, the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. Portfolio development, co-creating joint fundraising initiatives and supporting account management are among my daily tasks. Hence, I was looking for key tools and knowledge to contribute more confidently to discussions and design tailored approaches.

After seeing the breadth of topics proposed in the programme, I knew it was a perfect fit for my motivation. It would allow me to deepen my understanding of private-sector fundraising and develop successful strategies to engage supporters aligned with an organisation’s mission. I also valued the structured approach to project management, as it would help me take a step back and apply a more strategic lens to the projects I lead.

Besides, the Graduate Institute, a global hub for international affairs, was the ideal setting to learn from experienced practitioners.

What are your main takeaways from the programme?

Something that stayed with me long after the training was that each organisation must strive to match with the right funders—not just establish transactional relationships where donations are exchanged for reports. Donors increasingly see themselves as partners rather than mere funders, making it essential to engage them meaningfully; they must feel part of the organisation’s mission and of the positive impact they bring. Understanding how to craft compelling grant proposals and thinking outside the box are key conditions for success.

The module on AI in fundraising was particularly intriguing, showcasing efficiency gains without replacing human expertise. Beyond content, my fellow participants were a major highlight: professionals with diverse backgrounds from across the international sector, sharing insights and solutions to common challenges. Guest speakers were the cherry on top, with a UNICEF expert in Fundraising Innovation leaving a lasting impression on the ESG potential, alongside the perspective of a senior philanthropy advisor.

How do you envision applying the knowledge and tools you’ve gained from the course to your current role?

Only a few months after the course, I was able to implement some of the insights gained by co-developing a project-based fundraising strategy with humanitarian partners and stewarding high-value supporters of the Movement with an exclusive experience. Looking ahead, I hope to continue seizing opportunities to further reinforce cross-sector partnerships.

In a landscape of shrinking humanitarian funding and evolving donor priorities, organisations must foster strong collaboration to maximise their potential and clearly articulate their unique value proposition. This programme reinforced the importance of professionalising fundraising efforts and creating spaces for knowledge exchange—something I actively integrate into my work.
